Bolivia: Protesting healthcare workers likely to continue blocking transport at border crossing in Yacuiba, Tarija Department, into early August
Protesting healthcare workers likely to continue blocking Bolivia's Yacuiba border bridge with Argentina into at least early August.
Healthcare workers will likely continue their ongoing indefinite protest at Bolivia's Salvador Massa-Yacuiba International Bridge with Argentina into at least early August. The purpose of the action is to demand the government provide healthcare employees with much needed supplies. The action, which entered its fifth day as of July 26, is severely disrupting passenger and freight transport between the city of Santa Cruz and the border crossing, leaving over 200 diesel tanker trucks stranded in the area. Organizers assert the blockade will remain in place until the authorities address workers' demands.
Police will likely deploy to the protest location to monitor the gathering. Clashes are possible, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse protesters and reopen the roadway.
Avoid the protest as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Consider alternative transport routes for critical freights between Bolivia and Argentina. Do not attempt to drive through the roadblock; wait for police to clear it instead. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
