Bolivia: Transport workers have launched protests, built roadblocks in several areas the morning of July 31
Significant disruptions are likely to continue in several areas of Bolivia July 31, due to protests launched by transport workers.
Transport workers, mainly in the departments of Oruro, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, and Sucre have launched protests and built roadblocks in several inter-city highways the morning of July 31. They are demanding access to diesel and foreign currency.
Reports indicate protesters have blocked the roads in the outskirts of the city of Oruro, which lead to the border with Chile. Other roadblocks have been reported in the city of Sucre, as well in highways connecting the departments of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. While protests have not been reported inside La Paz, the bus terminal in the city suspended operations for July 31, due to the large number of blockades in highways around the country.
Significant transport disruptions are likely through at least late July 31. Further blockades are likely due to a strike called for Aug. 1. Business disruptions are likely over the coming days. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out in the coming hours, as authorities attempt to reopen main roads.
Plan for delays and alternative routes. Heed instructions of authorities. Avoid all protests due to the possibility of clashes.
