Mali: Suspected militant attack in Dembo, Mopti Region, July 21

Suspected militants kill at least 22 people in Dembo, Mopti Region, Mali, late July 21; heightened security likely in the coming days.

Informational

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the vicinity of Dembo village, Bankass Cercle, Mopti Region, over the coming days after suspected militants killed at least 22 civilians around 16:00 July 21. The assault also reportedly killed four traditional hunters defending the villagers while tending agricultural fields. Reports indicate that suspected militants also attacked the neighboring village of Sogou Dorkoum; while no casualties were reported, theft of material goods and livestock occurred. While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) is the suspected perpetrator.

Authorities could implement movement restrictions, vehicle checks, or curfew measures in the area on short notice in response to the assault. Similar attacks and armed clashes between militants and militia personnel cannot be ruled out over the coming days.

Due to the threat of further militant violence, exercise heightened vigilance if operating in the Mopti Region or other areas in northern Mali. Consider traveling with a security escort during daylight hours and only after a detailed review of your route. Heed all official directives. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.

Insecurity is prevalent across Mali, particularly in the country's central and northern areas. Despite long-running security operations, security forces remain largely unable to counter the threat posed by the numerous militant groups operating in the region. Such armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces on a regular basis.
