Philippines: Protest, police operation continuing at religious site near Francisco Bangoy International Airport, Davao City, Aug. 26 /update 1

Protest continuing near Francisco Bangoy International Airport, Davao City, Philippines, Aug. 26. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

As of the afternoon of Aug. 26, protests and a police operation were continuing outside the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) compound near Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) in Davao City. Participants are denouncing the arrest of church leader Apollo Quiboloy.

Related clashes broke out late Aug. 25, resulting in several protesters and police officers being injured. Participants had blocked both lanes of the Carlos P. Garcia Highway, disrupting access to DVO. Sources indicate that authorities resorted to the use of tear gas to disperse demonstrators who had set tires alight. The protesters have threatened to remain at the site until the police operation concludes.

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions will likely continue in the affected area at least over the coming hours. Further violence is possible, especially if police attempt to disperse the gathering forcibly. Mass arrests can occur if protesters are overly disruptive.

Avoid the protest as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Allow additional time for journeys in the affected area, especially if traveling via DVO. Heed all official directives. Leave the area at the first sign of unrest.
