Bolivia: Activists call for nationwide strike and road blockades from Sept. 16

Activists call for nationwide strike and various road blockades in western Bolivia from Sept. 16.

Warning

Unions representing farmers and peasants plan to launch an indefinite protest and strike campaign from Sept. 16. Organizers have announced road blockades on routes leading to the towns of Achacachi, Copacabana, Desaguadero, Oruro, Palca, Rio Abajo, Sorata, Viacha, Yungas, and Zongo. The majority of these roads are located in the west of the country near La Paz. The action has been called to demand the resignations of President Luis Arce and Vice President David Choquehuanca and for fresh elections. Security forces have reportedly deployed additional personnel to roadways. The action is separate from a protest led by Evo Morales; his supporters will march from Caracollo to La Paz Sept. 17-23.

Security forces are likely to monitor and track all related events. In addition to the planned roadblocks, protesters could gather on other routes or near prominent demonstration areas such as government buildings, city centers, and prominent plazas across the country. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. The actions are likely to result in disruptions to road travel. Depending on the duration of the roadblocks, delays in the delivery of essential goods are possible.

Avoid all demonstrations. Do not attempt to bypass road blockades or protests. Wait for police to clear them. Plan for road travel delays and consider alternative routes during the march period. Heed the instructions of local officials. Consider stocking up on essential goods, such as food, water and fuel, particularly in the west of the country.
