Malaysia, Singapore: Heavy rainfall forecast over Singapore and parts of Peninsular and East Malaysia through at least Jan. 12

Heavy rainfall forecast over parts of Malaysia and Singapore through at least Jan. 13. Flooding and associated disruptions possible.

Warning

Severe weather is forecast across Singapore and parts of Peninsular and East Malaysia through at least Jan. 13. Heavy rainfall associated with the ongoing Northeast Monsoon season is expected across the region over the coming days. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong wind gusts and lightning may accompany the heavy downpours. As of Jan. 10, Met Malaysia has issued red continuous rainfall warnings for much of Johor and parts of southern Pahang states through Jan. 12. Orange continuous rainfall warnings are in place for the rest of Johor and southern Pahang states and yellow warnings are in place across Malacca and parts of central and eastern Negeri Sembilan, central, eastern, and northeastern Pahang, and central and southern Terengganu states in Peninsular Malaysia and central and eastern Sarawak State in East Malaysia. The National Environment Agency of Singapore has issued a heavy rain warning late Jan. 10 and warned of a surge in monsoon activity with thundery showers and strong winds through Jan. 13.

Heavy downpours, flooding, and landslides could affect business, transport, and utility services in many areas. The potential for flooding is highest in low-lying communities near watercourses. Urban flooding is possible in areas with poorly maintained, inadequate, or non-existent drainage systems. Landslides and mudslides are possible in hilly and mountainous areas.

Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at domestic and international airports.

Monitor local media for updates and advisories on weather conditions. Confirm all transport reservations prior to travel. Due to the threat of flooding, avoid low-lying areas near streams, rivers, and other bodies of water, such as reservoirs and coastlines. Do not drive on flooded roads. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides/mudslides. Charge battery-powered devices when electricity is available; restrict the use of cellphones to emergencies only during periods of severe weather.
