Authorities confirm attack leaves at least nine dead, 60 others wounded in Sevare, Mopti Region, Mali, April 22; increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely in Sevare, Mopti Region, over the coming hours after a complex attack in the vicinity of a nearby military camp and Mopti Airport (MZI) killed at least nine people and wounded some 60 others early April 22. Malian military forces have secured the area following the assault, which involved three suicide bombings and destroyed about 20 buildings. While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, regional government officials reportedly suspect that jihadist militants carried it out.

Officials may implement movement restrictions, curfew measures, and/or vehicle checks in Sevare over the short term to reinforce the area's security. Traffic disruptions may impact the RN15 and RN6 highways in the Sevare area in the event that authorities enact such measures.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across Mali, particularly in the nation's central and northern regions. Despite long-running security operations in the region, security forces remain largely unable to counter the threat posed by Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and related splinter groups. Such armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces on a regular basis.

Advice

Maintain heightened vigilance if operating in Mopti Region or other areas in central Mali due to the threat of further militant violence. Consider conducting travel with a security escort during daylight hours and only following a detailed review of your route. Heed all official directives. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
