Mali: Three killed in clashes in Aguelhok July 6

Event

Clashes erupted between militants from the Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA) - an alliance of Tuareg-led separatist groups - and the Platform armed group - a coalition of pro-government militias - in Aguelhok (Kidal region, northern Mali) on Thursday, July 6. At least three people were reportedly killed in the fighting. According to a local source close to the CMA, the clashes were in retaliation for an attack against a CMA camp carried out earlier in the week.

Context

Such clashes between the CMA and Platform occur on a regular basis. A peace agreement was signed in June 2015 between the government, CMA rebels, and the Platform coalition in a bid to enhance local participatory governance and restore state authority in northern Mali. However, due to the complexity of the situation the agreement has not yet been fully implemented.
