Bolivia: 48-hour doctor strike May 17-18

The Federation of Medical and Allied Trade Unions (Fesimras) has organized a 48-hour nationwide doctor strike to take place on Wednesday and Thursday, May 17-18, in response to health care reforms recently passed by the government, notably the creation of the Health System Control and Inspection Authority. The strike could affect operations at hospitals and other health centers. Emergency rooms should remain open but non-urgent cases may be turned away and significantly increased waiting times are possible. Associated protests with the potential to result in traffic disruptions are to be anticipated, notably in La Paz.

Context

On April 20 of this year, doctors went on strike over the reforms that were implemented on February 15. In 2012, doctors went on strike for 52 days, paralyzing the Bolivian medical system
