Mali: Mine blast leaves three UN peacekeepers dead October 26

Event

A mine or improvised explosive device (IED) blast left at least three Chadian UN peacekeepers dead and two others wounded in Mali's Kidal region on Thursday, October 26. The peacekeepers' vehicle reportedly struck the explosive device around 14:30 (local time) while escorting a convoy on the road between the towns of Tessalit and Aguelhok (Kidal region), per a statement released Thursday by the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

Context

Over 80 MINUSMA personnel have been killed in militant attacks in Mali since 2013.

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4000 troops stationed throughout the Sahel.
