According to the national weather service Senamhi, 6-9 cm (3.5 in) of rain is expected to fall between Saturday night, January 6, and Sunday afternoon in various areas of the country, potentially leading to flooding. A number provinces in the departments of Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Beni, La Paz, and Pando are concerned.

Furthermore, heavy rain is forecast for the period January 4-8 in the Beni and Mamoré river basins (Santa Cruz department), potentially leading to flooding along these rivers and their tributaries. 

Context

Flooding is common in Bolivia, particularly during the rainy season (October to April), and can result in significant transportation disruptions, structural damage, and loss of life. At least one person drowned on January 2 due to flooding in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Santa Cruz department).

Advice

Individuals present in Bolivia are advised to monitor local weather reports and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
