Mali: Explosive devices found in Bamako

Significant number of explosive devices found in private house in Bamako April 6 underscores terror threat in capital; remain vigilant

Warning

Event

A large quantity of explosive devices was found in a private home in the capital Bamako on April 6. According to local security forces who arrived on the scene after an explosion was heard, the devices were intended to be used in terrorist attacks. One person was arrested following the security operation.

This discovery underscores the high prevailing terrorist threat in Bamako.

Context

According to the police investigation, the explosives were designed to be used for mining activities. However, they were apparently appropriated by members of the Macina Liberation Front armed group led by radical preacher Amadou Kufa; Kufa has pledged allegiance to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (Jama’at Nusrat al’Islam wal-Muslimin, JNIM), an Al-Qa’ida affiliate.

Bamako has witnessed several terrorist attacks since 2015. These include a June 2017 attack on the Campement Kangaba resort in Dougourakoro (approximately 10 km [6 mi] east of Bamako), a March 2015 shooting at a restaurant in the Hippodrome district, a November 2015 major hostage-taking attack at the Radisson Blu Hotel (Hamdallaye neighborhood), and a March 2016 attack attempt against the Azalai Hotel Nord Sud in Bamako's ACI 2000 neighborhood.

Advice

The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
