On Wednesday, April 25, Bolivian health authorities announced that an influenza outbreak in the country has left at least 12 people dead in Santa Cruz department. Most of the 395 confirmed cases in the country have also been reported in Santa Cruz department. In response to the outbreak, Bolivian health authorities have procured 1.8 million doses of influenza vaccine to prevent the spread of the illness. Despite such measures, further spread of influenza is possible in Santa Cruz department and elsewhere in Bolivia in the coming days and weeks.

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. An annual vaccine is available.
