General strike and traffic disruptions continue in Chuquisaca department as of May 9; avoid all protests

As of Wednesday, May 9, civil society groups in the Chuquisaca department have continued general strikes and protests in cities throughout the department. According to local sources, protesters erected roadblocks and demonstrations have been reported in Sucre, Macharetí, and on major roads in the region. Severe disruptions (including multiple cancelations) have also been reported at Sucre Alcantarí International Airport (SRE).
Protests, as well as business and transportation disruptions, are expected to continue in the coming days. Heightened security measures are likely in the vicinity of any gatherings.

Multiple unions and civil society groups called for protests to take place in Chuquisaca department starting on April 29, in defense of the development of the Incahuasi gas field and to demand that royalties on gas revenue be paid to the Chuquisaca department.
