Mali: At least six killed during attack in Sévaré June 29 /update 1
Unidentified militants kill at least six people during an assault on the G5 Sahel headquarters in Sévaré June 29; security operation ongoing
Event
Security sources said that at least six people were killed after unidentified militants attacked the G5 Sahel headquarters in Sévaré (Mopti region) on Friday, June 29. A sweeping operation is ongoing to secure the camp from further attacks. According to initial reports, the assailants used rockets, a car bomb, and small arms in their assault. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of Friday evening (local time).
Context
Due
to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central
regions, including Mopti, remain unstable despite the presence of MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions
in the world, and a French-led intervention launched in
2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds.
Advice
Individuals are advised to avoid the area until further notice. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to Mali.
