Mali: Al-Qa’ida claims attack in Sévaré June 29 /update 2
Al-Qa’ida affiliate Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claims responsibility for assault on G5 Sahel headquarters in Sévaré June 29
Event
The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), a local Al-Qa'ida affiliate, reportedly claimed responsibility for the assault on the G5 Sahel base in Sévaré (Mopti region) on Friday, June 29. According to Malian defense officials, a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) detonate while attempting to enter the camp. A number of attackers reportedly infiltrated the base and engaged security forces. Militants also fired mortars or rockets during the assault. According to the governor of Mopti region, four attackers were captured and three were killed in the fighting. At least two Malian soldiers also died.
Context
Due
to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central
regions, including Mopti, remain unstable despite the presence of MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions
in the world, and a French-led intervention launched in
2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds.
