Mali: Increase in crime and banditry reported in Gao

According to local officials in Gao (Gao region) as of mid-July, a steep increase in crime and banditry has been reported in the city in recent months, despite the presence of the Malian police and of United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) peacekeepers. City officials have expressed concern over the increase in robberies (to both homes and businesses), as well as car thefts and violent carjackings.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
