Bangladesh: High levels of dust pollution anticipated in Dhaka during dry season

Experts anticipate high levels of dust pollution in Dhaka from mid-October to March

Warning

Event

Environmental experts have warned that already worrying levels of dust pollution in the capital Dhaka are anticipated to worsen as the country enters the dry season, which runs from mid-October to March. Dust levels are currently very high due to unregulated construction sites, improper waste management, and poorly maintained vehicles. Experts have called on the local authorities to take action and implement measures to reduce pollution levels, warning of a looming public health crisis. Protests by environment activists cannot be ruled out.

Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) has ranked Dhaka as one of the most polluted cities in the world.

Advice

Individuals in Dhaka are advised to monitor the situation and follow any instructions issued by authorities. Due to health risks associated with air pollution, it is advisable to limit outdoor activities. Pollution is especially hazardous to vulnerable individuals - e.g. children, seniors, pregnant women, and individuals suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues. If experiencing breathing difficulties, do not hesitate to seek medical attention, particularly if new symptoms appear (cough, sore throat, irritated eyes).
