Yemen: Government rejects Houthi port deal Nov. 28 as fighting continues /update 19

Event

On Wednesday, November 28, the Yemeni government rejected a Houthi-proposed port deal for Al-Hudaydah that would see the UN manage operations with port revenue staying with the rebel group. Fighting has continued around Al-Hudaydah in recent weeks, particularly around the northern and eastern edges of the city, with numerous airstrikes and artillery fire reported in the port city. Peace talks are scheduled to resume in early December, though consistent fighting and a possible escalation in violence is likely as both sides attempt to gain an advantage ahead of the negotiations.

Context

Yemen is engaged in a complex and deadly conflict, ongoing since Houthi rebels entered into a civil war with the Yemeni government, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, in 2015. The Saudi-led coalition has carried out thousands of airstrikes in Yemen since its intervention began. Hundreds of Yemeni civilians have been killed in the strikes, which have hit schools, hospitals, and markets, in addition to Houthi militant positions and personnel. In total, more than 10,000 Yemenis have died in the fighting and some 3 million have been displaced.
