Mali: 37 civilians killed in ethnic violence in Mopti region January 1

Event

Armed gunmen reportedly attacked the village of Koulogon (Mopti region) at around 05:00 (local time) on Tuesday, January 1, killing at least 37 Fulani civilians. According to a government statement, numerous buildings were also set on fire by the assailants, who were dressed as traditional Donzo hunters. Similar clashes between rival ethnic groups are possible in Mopti region over the near term.

Context

Clashes regularly break out between members of hunter, farmer, and herder communities in central Mali. The region has been characterized by insecurity and turmoil since insurgent groups took over much of the north in 2012, prompting French military intervention and the creation of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).
