Roughly a dozen gunmen attacked a border post in Yorosso Cercle (Sikasso region) during the overnight hours (local time) July 3-4. Sources claim the unidentified gunmen arrived at the border post from Burkina Faso and occupied the site for several hours, burning multiple police vehicles. At least two people were wounded in the attack.

Similar violence and attacks are possible in Sikasso region over the coming weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world. Since 2013, some 170 peacekeepers have been killed in Mali.
