Warning

Event

A demonstration is scheduled to take place in Bamako on Monday, July 15. According to US diplomatic authorities, participants plan to gather at the Palais de la Culture in the Badalabougou area at 14:00 (local time). Whlie the protest is expected to remain peaceful, the diplomatic authorities warned that local police have used tear gas and other riot control measures to disperse protesters at previous similar demonstrations.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the protest site.

Context

Demonstrators frequently stage protests in the Badalabougou area of Bamako to denounce the move of the G5 Sahel headquarters to Bamako. The move comes after the former G5 Sahel headquarters in Mopti was attacked in June 2018. Some protesters argue the relocation of the headquarters to the capital is likely to attract militant activity to the area.

Advice

Individuals in Bamako are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
