Mali: Fulani village attacked in Mopti region January 16

Event

A group of gunmen on motorbikes attacked the village of Sinda (Mopti region) overnight from Wednesday, January 15, into Thursday, January 16. According to the UN, at least 14 people were killed and two others wounded in the assault, which targeted members of the Fulani ethnic community. Initial reports indicate that the attackers were dressed as Dozo traditional hunters. Some homes were set on fire and livestock was also stolen.

Retaliatory attacks are possible in the region over the near term.

Context

Sinda is located approximately 12 km (7 mi) from Douentza.

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4500 troops stationed throughout the Sahel.
