Mali: Militant attack in Gao region leaves 20 dead April 6

Event

Suspected militants attacked an army camp in Gao region on Monday, April 6, killing at least 20 Malian soldiers and wounding several others. According to military officials, suspected Islamic militants attacked the army camp in Bamba early Monday morning (local time). No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Similar attacks are possible in northern Mali over the near term.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4500 troops stationed throughout the Sahel.
