Local officials kidnapped in Dire (Tombouctou Region) on June 17; security operations likely in near term

Two local officials were kidnapped on Wednesday, June 17, in the Tombouctou region city of Dire. The sub-prefects of Dire and Dangha were reportedly seized by unidentified gunmen who stormed their offices in the city on Wednesday morning before fleeing the area with their hostages. At least three people were wounded in the initial attack, including one who later died of their injuries. Local security forces responded to the incident but were unable to locate the kidnapped officials.

Security operations are likely in the area in the near term.
