Argentina: Thousands gather in Buenos Aires amid three days of national mourning November 26

Thousands of fans have gathered outside the presidential palace, Casa Rosada, in Buenos Aires on Thursday, November 26, to pay their respect to Argentine footballer Diego Maradona who died on Wednesday, November 25, of a heart attack. Three days of national mourning began on Thursday. Following the announcement of his death on Wednesday, officials began installing cordons and other measures in efforts to limit the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as large crowds gathered in Plaza de Mayo. Maradona's coffin is expected to be on public display until Thursday afternoon; a million people are expected to visit it. Earlier on Thursday, fans clashed with police outside Casa Rosada as they queued to see the casket.

Localized disruptions and heightened security should be anticipated in the vicinity of gatherings which will likely continue throughout the national mourning period. Further clashes cannot be ruled out.
