Argentina: Government workers to launch provincewide strike, protests in Mendoza, Dec. 8-9

Unionized government workers to hold protests, strike in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, Dec. 8-9, to demand salary increases.

Government workers affiliated with multiple unions, including the Association of State Workers (Asociacion de Trabajadores del Estado, ATE) and the Union of Education Workers (Sindicato Unido de Trabajadores de la Educacion, SUTE), plan to hold a protest in the city of Mendoza and a 24-hour strike provincewide in Mendoza Dec. 8-9 to demand that regional authorities increase their salaries.

Activists intend to hold a protest outside the Auditorio Angel Bustelo, near the provincial government offices in the city of Mendoza, starting 1900 Dec. 8. Additionally, the workers plan to hold a 24-hour strike covering the entire province of Mendoza Dec. 9, with associated rallies in major cities, especially downtown Mendoza, as well as Godoy Cruz, Las Heras, and San Rafael. The specific locations of the Dec. 9 rallies have not been announced.

Thousands are likely to join the main rally Dec. 8, and hundreds are likely to participate in demonstrations Dec. 9. Disruptions are likely in multiple public services Dec. 9, including education, health, government, transport, and security. Roadblocks and clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
