Mali: Six wounded in attack against French forces in Hombori Jan. 8

Event

An improvised explosive device (IED) wounded six French soldiers after the convoy they were traveling in was attacked Jan. 8. The incident happened at a location approximately 50 km (31 miles) southeast of Hombori, Mopti Region. The assailant had attempted to infiltrate the convoy in a military vehicle before detonating the device.

Context

Landmine explosions, attacks, and roadside bombs are common in central and northern regions of Mali. The threat is highest along highways and roads frequently used by security forces in Mopti, Aguelhok, Anefis, Gao, Tessalit, and Tombouctou. Islamist militants waging an insurgency in central and northern Mali will likely continue to carry out attacks in those regions. Several foreign military personnel have been killed or wounded since January 2019.
