Bolivia: Health workers staging nationwide strike over new legislation through Feb. 28
Healthcare workers maintaining nationwide strike in Bolivia until Feb. 28. Emergency services likely to remain available. Protests possible
Event
Healthcare workers affiliated with the National Health Council (Consejo Nacional de Salud, CONASA) are staging a nationwide strike through at least Feb. 28. The action was launched Feb. 19 to demand the immediate repeal of the country's recently approved emergency health law. Medical workers are especially opposed to the prohibition of any agitations by health personnel, such as strikes, under the new law.
Organizers have stated that the work stoppage will not affect emergency services and COVID-19 care. Nonetheless, unless the walkout is suspended, disruptions to routine health services at government hospitals and health facilities are likely due to understaffing. Increased demand for care could also disrupt services at private facilities.
Demonstrations are fairly common during health-related strikes and may occur during the strike period. Potential rally points include hospitals, government buildings, and central squares. Major violence is unlikely; however, the possibility of isolated skirmishes cannot be discounted.
Advice
Confirm medical appointments at public health facilities through Feb. 28. Be prepared for some delays. Follow all security personnel instructions. Avoid all protests.
