Suspected militants ambushed a detachment of Malian troops from the 53rd Rapid Response Company, killing at least two soldiers and injuring seven others in the Mopti Region during the night of Feb. 23. According to official military sources, the incident occurred along the RN6 highway about 32 km (20 miles) northeast of Sevare as the soldiers were en route to the village of Konna.

The deadly raid highlights the severe threat of militant attacks in the Mopti Region. Efforts by authorities to curtain such activities have largely failed in recent years.
