Eritrea lifts several domestic COVID-19 restrictions as of June 1; international entry controls remain largely unchanged.

Warning

Event

As of June 1, authorities in Eritrea have eased several domestic restrictions that had been implemented as part of the nation's effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. Under current directives, all businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues are allowed to open but must close by 20:00 nightly. Private vehicles and other means of individual transportation may once again be used; public transport has resumed operation. Government institutions have returned to functioning at normal levels, including providing non-essential services. Social events, however, remain prohibited; funerals and mourning services are still limited to 10 attendees.

Restrictions on international travel, however, remain largely unchanged as compared with the measures that were in effect during early May. Land and sea borders remain closed; cargo and freight are subject to enhanced screening measures. International commercial flights are operating at reduced levels. All permitted passengers arriving at Asmara International Airport (ASM) must provide a negative result from a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before arrival. Incoming travelers are also subject to a rapid COVID-19 antigen test upon arrival in Eritrea. Additionally, all arriving passengers with permanent residence in Asmara are required to self-quarantine for seven days in their homes after entering the country. All other passengers must stay in government-designated facilities for the same period at their own expense. Persons seeking to depart Eritrea require a negative result from a PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure.

Authorities could announce additional restrictions in the coming weeks, depending on disease activity; further measures may be implemented on short notice.
