Local officials announced that five locals kidnapped June 21 have been released between the localities of Bankass and Bandiagara, Motpi Region, during the afternoon of June 23. The reason for the release remains unclear, however, reports indicate that the vehicle transporting the victims faced an engine failure, forcing kidnappers to free the locals. No group claimed responsibility as of yet.

Unidentified assailants kidnapped the five victims in the Mopti Region June 21. The victims had been traveling from Segue, Mopti Region, towards San, Segou Region when the incident occurred.

Context

The incident underscores the severe insecurity and risk of kidnap from armed elements operating in Mali. Efforts by local authorities to halt such activities have largely failed to lessen the threat.
