Unidentified assailants attacked a security position with a car bomb near Ichagara in the Tarkint area of Gao Region, June 25. The attack left at least 15 German soldiers injured. The identity of the attackers is unclear.

Context

The attack highlights the threat of militant violence in northern Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups waging an insurgency in restive regions of the country almost certainly perpetrated the attack. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups in these regions continue to demonstrate an increased capability to strike civilian and military targets, as well as peacekeeping forces.
