Event
At least seven peacekeepers with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) were injured July 9 in a roadside bomb explosion near Diallo in the Mopti region. The incident occurred while the peacekeepers were patrolling the area. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.
Context
The attack underscores the pervasive insecurity in northern Mali. Landmine explosions, attacks, and roadside bombs are common in the central and northern regions of Mali. The threat is highest along highways and roads frequently used by security forces in Mopti, Aguelhok, Anefis, Gao, Tessalit, and Tombouctou. Islamist militants waging an insurgency in central and northern Mali will likely continue to carry out attacks in those regions.
