Unidentified assailants killed 3 civilians during a nighttime attack in Goundaka, Mopti Region, Mali, July 20-21. The attackers also reportedly burned down police posts, civilian homes, and stole livestock. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.

Goundaka is located approximately 31 km (19 miles) east of Mopti, the administrative capital of Mopti Region.

Context

The incident underscores the pervasive insecurity in central and northern Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups waging an insurgency in restive regions of the country almost certainly perpetrated the attacks. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups in these regions continue to demonstrate an increased capability to strike civilian and military targets, as well as peacekeeping forces. The security situation in Mopti Region is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence, as well as issues such as lawlessness and banditry.
