Mali: Militant attack in Gao region leaves at least 51 civilians dead Aug. 8

Event

Unidentified assailants killed at least 51 civilians during early evening attacks on the villages of Ouatagouna, Karou, and Deouteguef, in the Gao region, Mali, Aug. 8. The attackers also reportedly burned down homes and stole livestock. There have been no claims of responsibility for the raid.

The epicenter of the attacks is located approximately 144 km (90 miles) southeast of the city of Gao.

Context

The incident is characteristic of instability in central and northern Mali, especially along the border regions with Burkina Faso and Niger. Islamist militants or affiliated groups waging an insurgency in restive regions have perpetrated similar attacks previously. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate an increased capability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation in Gao region is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence, as well as lawlessness and banditry.
