Further protests are possible following a demonstration in Djenne, Mopti region, Aug. 22. Thousands of people reportedly took to the streets to denounce increased insecurity in the area and support the action of security forces.

Similar protests could occur in other areas across Mali affected by latent insecurity. Additional security forces will likely be deployed in areas where protests materialize. Ground travel disruptions, including road closures, near protest sites are likely. Demonstrators may seek to escalate protests in response to government action.

Context

Central Mali faces pervasive insecurity, mostly due to the presence of Islamist militants or affiliated groups waging an insurgency in restive regions of the country. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups in these regions continue to demonstrate an increased capability to strike civilian and military targets, as well as peacekeeping forces. The security situation in Mopti Region is further undermined by local rivalries, competition for resources, and sporadic communal violence, as well as issues such as lawlessness and banditry.
