Unidentified assailants ambushed Malian security forces near the locality of Kolongo, Macina Cercle, Segou Region, at around 11:45 Sept. 12. Authorities have confirmed that the attack left five soldiers dead; three attackers were also killed. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Al-Qaeda and Islamic State-aligned militants operate in the region and are most likely to have executed the assault. Further attacks on security personnel are likely.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across the country. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence and lawlessness, and banditry.
