Event
A health transport convoy reportedly hit an improvised explosive device (IED) while traveling between Bankass and Sevare on National Road 15 (RN15), Mopti Region Sept. 20. The incident occurred between Parou bridge and Songovia. The blast killed at least four Malian soldiers. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. A security operation is underway in the area.
Further attacks on security personnel are possible in the Mopti region.
Context
Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence and lawlessness, and banditry.
