Event

Armed groups staged two separate attacks in Gao (North) and Mopti (Center) regions, Oct. 23, killing at least 15 people. In Gao, assailants attacked a vigilante group gathered at the entrance of the city, killing 10 people and injuring six others. Three assailants were also killed in ensuing clashes. Meanwhile, unidentified assailants attacked the villages of Tile (Doucoumbo commune, Bandiagara) and Dourou (Bandiagara), Mopti region, killing five people and injuring eight others.

Increased security is likely in the affected areas over the coming days. Further attacks are also likely both in the north and center parts of the country.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence and lawlessness, and banditry.

Avoid travel at night and consider travel in convoy outside of Bamako. Liaise with trusted sources on the status of routes before departure. Maintain regular contact with your diplomatic representation.
