Militants ambushed a bus between the village of Songo and Bandiagara in Mopti Region, Dec. 3, killing at least 31 civilians and injuring about eight others.

Increased security is likely in the area over the coming days. Further attacks on civilians and security personnel are also likely in the Mopti region.

Songo is located about 525 km (326miles) southwest of Gao.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants and affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups still demonstrate the ability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence and lawlessness, and banditry.
