Mali: Anti-French military presence rally ongoing in Bamako Dec. 10
Civil society group protesting French military at Place de l'Independance in Bamako, Mali from 14:00 Dec. 10- Dec. 12.
Event
The Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts civil society group has organized a rally in Bamako beginning 14:00 Dec. 10 at Place de l'Independance (also called Monument de l'Independance). The demonstration will reportedly last through Dec. 12. Participants will gather to protest the presence of French military forces in Mali. Hundreds of people may attend.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of Place de l’Independance from the afternoon of Dec. 10. Given the nature of the demonstration, clashes with security forces are possible. Counterdemonstrations cannot be ruled out.
Context
In recent weeks and months, anti-French military and anti-government protests have increased across the Sahel region following numerous deadly militant attacks on civilians and security forces. Efforts by regional militaries and their French security partners to halt the spread of violent militancy have largely failed, increasing widespread frustration for local populations.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations and large concentrations of police and plan accordingly for ground travel disruptions. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
