Argentina: Further protests may occur in Chubut Province through December in opposition to mining projects
Further protests may occur in Chubut Province, Argentina, through December in opposition to mining projects.
Event
Further anti-mining protests are likely in Rawson and possibly elsewhere in Chubut Province through December following disruptive and violent protests overnight Dec. 15/16 near the legislature building in Rawson. Demonstrators gathered in the area late Dec. 15 in opposition to the approval of a controversial mining project, including in parts of Telsen and Gastre. Several people, including police officials and protesters, were injured during the confrontations.
Protests are likely in Rawson and possible in other cities in the province, including Comodoro Rivadavia. Gathering areas include the legislature building in Rawson and other government buildings, public squares, and town centers across the province. Protesters could also gather near mining sites. Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor and manage demonstrations. Clashes and localized ground travel delays are likely near all protest areas.
Advice
Exercise caution in Chubut Province in the coming days. Avoid all protests. Heed the instructions of the local security forces.
