Militants killed one French soldier and injured nine others during an attack against the Barkhane military camp near Gao Jan. 22. The identity of the attackers is unclear.

The French military will likely maintain a heightened security posture in the impact area over the coming days. Further similar attacks remain almost certain.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly.
