Mali: US Embassy issues terrorism warning for Bamako May 6

US Embassy in Mali issues terrorism warning for Bamako May 6. Exercise heightened caution.

Warning

Event

The US Embassy in Mali issued a security alert May 6 advising that an attack in Bamako targeting government offices, locations frequented by Westerners, and key infrastructure including Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO), may be planned. The embassy further announced a 23:00-05:00 curfew for embassy staff and advised them to avoid crowded areas and venues frequented by Westerners. It is unclear how long the warning is in force. Malian authorities have reportedly reinforced security measures at airports across the country, including BKO.

Increased security measures, including checkpoints, night patrols, as well as random vehicle searches are possible. Localized transport disruptions could occur in areas with a heavy security presence.

Advice

Exercise heightened vigilance if operating in Bamako, particularly in public places frequented by foreign nationals. Consider avoiding such places in the coming days. Heed the instructions of local authorities; remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations while operating in the country.
