Peru: No major damage reported following earlier magnitude-7.2 earthquake in Puno Region May 26 /update 1
Damage assessments ongoing following magnitude-7.2 earthquake in Puno Region, Peru, May 26. No initial reports of significant damage.
Event
Authorities have reported no significant material damage following a magnitude-7.2 earthquake in Puno Region early May 26. Landslides have occurred in the neighboring region of Arequipa, including along the Camana-Chala highway, and damage assessments are ongoing across the affected area. It may take some time before the full extent of any damage is known, especially in remote areas.
The earthquake occurred at around 07:02 May 26 and the epicenter was about 13 km (8 miles) west-northwest of Azangaro. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 218 km (135 miles), and the considerable depth of the earthquake is why there is likely to be less damage caused than might be expected by an earthquake of this magnitude. Significant shaking was felt across much of southern Peru, including in Puno, Arequipa, Apurimac, Cusco, Moquega, and Tacna regions. Light shaking may have been felt across an even wider area into central Peru, northwestern Bolivia, and far northern Chile. Moderate-to-light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
Advice
Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
