Bolivia: Government of Santa Cruz plans department-wide strike for Aug. 8-9

Activists, regional authorities to stage 48-hour strike in the Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia, Aug. 8-9.

Warning

Event

The government of Santa Cruz plans to sponsor a 48-hour department-wide general strike Aug. 8-9 to protest the national government's decision to postpone the country's census until 2024. The census was originally slated to take place in November 2022.

During the strike, most local government services will be limited and some businesses will likely close. Classes in many schools and universities may be canceled. Public transportation, however, will likely operate normally as labor leaders in the transport sector have decided not to take part in the work stoppage; participation may vary by location as several municipalities within Santa Cruz Department have also decided not to observe the strike.

Although no group has announced specific plans for such gatherings, protests could occur in locations around the department, especially in the city of Santa Cruz.

Advice

Confirm all business appointments in Santa Cruz Department for Aug. 8-9, especially those with local government offices. Avoid any protests that may materialize; allow additional time to reach destinations near potential demonstration locations. Strictly heed the instructions of authorities.
