Trade unions striking in Gao Region, Mali, over increased insecurity, Nov. 8-10. Disruptions likely; protests possible.

Warning

Event

Trade Unions in Mali, including the Union Nationale des Travailleurs du Mali (UNTM), are engaging in strike action in Gao Region Nov. 8-10. The action is to protest the military government’s apparent inaction against growing Islamist militant attacks in the country's north. Disruptions to local administrative services and transportation services are expected for the duration of the strike. Markets and shops will also reportedly remain closed. Related protests cannot be ruled out.

Context

Since March, the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) has increased its attacks in the northern Gao and Menaka regions, leading to intense fighting with the Al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nasr al‑Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and Tuareg armed groups. Hundreds of civilians have been killed as a result of the ISGS offensives.

Advice

Consider deferring nonessential travel to Gao Region. If in Gao, plan for disruptions to transport and commercial operations. Avoid all protests.
