Informational

Event

Power and water supply disruptions are ongoing in Rosario the evening of Dec. 6 after an explosion at the Sorrento power station. The blast reportedly occurred at 17:35; the cause is currently unknown. Resulting power shortages have affected operations at municipal water treatment facilities. Reports indicate that disruptions to electricity are focused on the northern parts of Rosario, while disruptions to water supplies are occurring throughout the city.

It is not immediately clear how long utility disruptions will continue, though they may persist until at least Dec. 8. Temporary commercial and communications disruptions, including cellular and mobile services, are possible during power outages. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times may occur during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Trains may also experience delays if outages impact signaling devices or overhead wires. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations. There is an increased security threat during power outages. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages. Water outages may lead to business disruptions, particularly for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water to maintain operations

Advice

Plan accordingly for power supply disruptions. Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies until regular power supply resumes. Exercise caution when driving or crossing streets in areas where traffic signals are malfunctioning. Conserve water if supply is available. Stockpile water and use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes. Water quality after service resumes may be poor; run taps for several minutes before use. Boil water until officials clear supply for normal consumption.
