The Grand Alliance, a coalition of several political parties including the ruling Awami League (AL), plans to rally at Dhaka's Suhrawardy Udyan landmark Dec. 19 to mobilize greater political support ahead of the upcoming general election. Similar previous demonstrations have attracted thousands of participants.
Authorities will almost certainly tighten security near the gathering site. Clashes between AL activists and police, as well as between AL supporters and counterdemonstrators, are possible. Demonstrators could also march along and/or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.
Advice
Avoid the rally as a standard security precaution. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow extra time to reach destinations near the rally venue through the evening of Dec. 19. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
